Post-Purchase Upsell

Playbook for calling recent customers to offer related products and add-ons.

Post-purchase upsell calls reach out to recent buyers with related products, accessories, or upgrades. This is often the strongest position for outbound calling — you have an existing relationship and a natural reason to connect.

These are recommendations. Reach out and we'll help confirm your configuration.

Why upsell calls work well

Calling recent customers is different from cold outreach:

  • Existing relationship — They bought from you. In many jurisdictions, this gives you a stronger legal footing (e.g., Canada's 18-month purchase window, Australia's inferred consent for related products, France's ongoing-contract exception).
  • Relevant context — You know what they bought, so you can offer something genuinely useful.
  • Higher trust — They've already had a positive experience with your brand.

Your setup checklist

Depending on where you're calling:

  • US: Same rules as abandoned carts — get written consent for artificial/prerecorded voice marketing calls at checkout.
  • UK/Canada/Australia/EU: Existing-customer relationships often help, but automated/AI calls typically still need specific consent. See the region pages for details.

For AI/automated calls, the safest approach everywhere is explicit consent that covers automated marketing calls.

2. Keep offers relevant

Call about products related to what they bought. "You purchased X — here's Y that works great with it" lands better than random promotions, and in some jurisdictions (like France) relevance to the existing purchase/contract matters legally.

3. Configure your script

Your script should:

  • Open with your brand name
  • Reference their recent purchase
  • Make a clear, relevant offer
  • Honor opt-outs immediately

Example: "Hi, this is Acme. You recently ordered our coffee maker — I'm calling to let you know about our subscription coffee service that pairs perfectly with it."

4. Connect your Twilio account

Phone numbers need to be on your own Twilio account. We'll help you set this up.
