Obtaining Twilio numbers for inbound calls in United States.

Last checked: 16 October 2026. Scope: obtaining numbers for inbound/general telephony.

Number types

TypeWhat to check
LocalSearch the desired area code and confirm Voice capability
Toll-freeSearch toll-free inventory and confirm Voice capability
Mobile / nationalDo not assume a separate purchasable category; check live inventory

Twilio's regulatory-compliance registration guide excludes the United States and Canada from that registration program. We therefore do not list a country regulatory bundle, local-address proof, or company-register document as a standard inbound-number prerequisite here. This does not waive Twilio account verification or any number-specific checkout requirement.

What to prepare

For either a business or an individual, have a Twilio account able to purchase numbers, billing details, the desired area code/type, and an inbound call destination. Follow any account verification requested by Twilio. Confirm the price and Voice capability before purchase, then configure and test inbound routing.

Twilio's United States voice guidelines list domestic and international inbound reachability and domestic toll-free reachability. Test the caller networks that matter to your service; do not assume toll-free works from every country.

Before ordering

Messaging registrations are outside this guide. Do not use an SMS onboarding checklist as the checklist for an inbound voice-only number. For the common purchasing workflow and terminology, see the overview.
